Harlington hospice was set up as a direct result of a clearly identified local need: to provide specialist palliative care to those suffering from a non-curative illness including cancer. The hospice's services are provided free of charge to people who live in the London Borough of Hillingdon.

The hospice was founded in 1984 by local people and remains ‘owned’ by the community, Core to the hospice's objectives is the belief that independence is the key to community involvement and the engagement of the whole community over the Hospice's history is regarded as the Charity's greatest asset. Over 250 volunteers regularly give their time, without whose support the hospice would be unable to provide their much need services and almost 70% of their fundraising activity comes from the local community.

Clients who attend the day hospice enjoy complimentary therapies such as aromatherapy and reiki, art therapies including film production, outings and emotional and spiritual support. The Lymphoedema centre undertakes approximately 90 sessions a month. For those who require extra care and support at home the Hospice at Home team has 8 skilled nurses who provide care day or night. Bereavement counsellors give support either at the Hospice or at home and there are groups for carers and for those recently bereaved.

The costs to deliver these services are approximately £19,000 a week, and the hospice relies heavily on charitable fundraising and donations since only 20% of their funding comes from government support. Support from individuals local organizations and companies is a vital part of their fundraising and this is where you come in...
