Hospice in the Weald

This will be the third publication that we've produced on behalf of the Hospice in the Weald, in a relationship that has seen the publication go from strength to strength.

We are fortunate to be working with yet another very highly regarded Hospice. Now in its 28th year, the Hospice in the Weald provides a voluntary funded Specialist Palliative Care service to a population of 280,000 over 400 square miles of West Kent and East Sussex.

The services support people diagnosed with cancer, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, HIV/Aids and other life threatening conditions. The Hospice’s support services extend to the whole family and the patient’s carers. In particular the needs of children are addressed. The specialist palliative care nursing and medical services are backed up with family support, bereavement counselling and spiritual care together with health information and educational services.

Every year the Hospice in the Weald has over 600 patient referrals from NHS hospitals, GPs and District Nurses, so that patients can benefit from the excellent facilities and expertise which the Hospice can offer. The Hospice has a team of Community Nurse Specialists offering 24 hour advice and support. The In-Patient facilities provide a secure environment for pain relief, symptom control and terminal care. The Day Therapy Centre offers a range of treatments and complementary therapies to enable patients to remain in their homes. Hospice in the Weald only receives core funding from the Government of around 10% of the annual £3m costs of providing these vital services.

The Hospice therefore depends on the generosity and support of its community. Despite 90p in the £ of all income going directly on patient services, the Hospice is sadly unable to financially provide all the services requested by the community.
