We're delighted with the first edition, which we feel is modern, fresh and effectively communicates both the hospice's ethos and message - and we're excited about producing the second edition to build on this great start.
In addition to the printed magazine, we have also produced an electronic copy which can be embedded (or linked to) from supporters' websites and emailed out from the hospice as well. This helps the hospice to further extend the reach of their message cost-effectively and efficiently. Mission Statement
St Wilfrid’s Hospice is a local charity providing skilled and compassionate care.
History
St Wilfrid’s Hospice was registered as a charity in 1982 and the house in Mill Gap Road was bought with an anonymous donation in the same year. The name "Wilfrid” means “resolute peace” and was chosen as the launch of the charity coincided with the 1300th anniversary of St Wilfrid bringing Christianity to Sussex. Day Therapy was opened on the 7th July 1982 and the first in-patients were admitted in November 1983.
Over our 25 year history there have been many developments of the service including the development of a bereavement service in 1986 and a home care service in 1990. Following a major appeal, an extension was built in 1992 increasing our in-patient beds to 10.
We established a specialist Lymphoedema service in 1996 and in 2003, with a grant from the national lottery, the home care service was developed into a comprehensive Hospice at Home service providing 24 hour care for patients in the last few months of life, with medical, physiotherapy and complementary therapy support as needed.
Catchment Area
St Wilfrid’s Hospice serves a population of approximately 230,000 living in Eastbourne, Seaford, Hailsham, Heathfield, Uckfield and the surrounding villages. Nearly a quarter of the population in the Eastbourne area is aged over 65 (compared to a national average of 16%). The population of Eastbourne aged over 85 is two and a quarter times the national rate at 4% with the resultant demand that population has for our service.
Service
Referrals are made by GPs, Hospital Consultants, District Nurses and Macmillan Clinical Nurse Specialists. St Wilfrid’s has a 10 bedded in-patient unit, 12 place Day Therapy open five days a week with a satellite Day Therapy in Heathfield, Hospice at Home care including a night sitting service, a bereavement service, complementary therapy service, a specialist lymphoedema service, consultants in palliative medicine working in the community and in the local hospital and an active education programme. We contract one bed a week in a local nursing home for respite care. In 2006 we cared for 698 people in all aspects of the service.
StaffingSt Wilfrid’s employs 120 people (77 whole time equivalent). Professional development is given a high priority, to ensure that staff have the professional qualifications and competencies to enable us to provide a specialist service. Over 300 volunteers are actively involved in supporting the work of the hospice.
Funding
It will cost £3.2 million to run the service in 2007/08 and the NHS will contribute 15%. St Wilfrid’s continues to be successful in attracting legacy gifts and over half of all our income will come from this source. Fundraising will raise the rest of the money through events, donations, trusts and shops. St Wilfrid’s Hospice has financial reserves set aside to protect the charity from a downturn in legacy income and a strategic development reserve to fund the new RE@CH plan described below.
Strategic Direction
In the summer of 2007 we launched our “RE@CH” plan for the future of St Wilfrid’s Hospice as we started to celebrate our 25th anniversary. Last year we cared for nearly 700 patients but we know that four times that many needed our support. Most of our patients had cancer but in the future we want to make sure that St Wilfrid’s Hospice also cares for those with other serious illnesses. The RE@CH plan includes a rapid response team of doctors and nurses who will see all patients within 48 hours; we will continue to care for patients with complex problems in our hospice beds at Mill Gap Road. We will have extra beds in a
carefully selected nursing home where our nurses will care for patients at the end of life to the same exacting hospice standards and we will build a new hospice clinic at Mill Gap Road where patients will be seen by a doctor, nurse or therapist, if needed we will transport patients to and fro in a hospice taxi. We will continue to offer nursing care, advice and emotional support to those who want to be cared for in their own homes. These plans are being developed this year, next year we expect to start refurbishing and building the Hospice Clinic and will launch the rapid response team.
